Permits

A skip placed on a public road — including outside your own house, if there's no room for it on private land — needs a permit from the local council. This has to be arranged in advance, usually takes a few working days to process, and the skip has to display the permit while it's on the road. If the skip sits entirely on your own driveway or private land, no permit is needed.

Man-and-van removal doesn't require any permit. The crew arrives, loads the waste, and leaves, so there's no vehicle left occupying road space and nothing to arrange with the council beforehand.

Speed and flexibility

Man-and-van services are generally same-day or bookable on short notice, which makes them well suited to jobs where you need the rubbish gone quickly. Skip hire works on a different timescale — you book the skip, it's delivered, it sits on site while you fill it (often over several days), and then it's collected. That's fine for an ongoing job but slower if you just want something gone today.

Space required

A skip needs somewhere to sit for the duration of the hire — a driveway, or a permitted spot on the road — and that space is unavailable for anything else while the skip is there. Man-and-van removal doesn't need any dedicated space; the van pulls up, is loaded, and moves on.

Suitability by waste type

Skips suit ongoing renovation or DIY projects where waste builds up over several days — building rubble, garden clearance, or a kitchen refit generate waste steadily rather than all at once, and having a skip on site means you can add to it as you go.

Man-and-van suits one-off clearances — a house clearance, a single bulky item, or general household rubbish that's ready to go now. It also handles awkward access far better: if the waste is up several flights of stairs in a flat, or has to be carried through a narrow side passage, a skip sitting on the road doesn't solve that problem, but a removal team carrying items out to a van does.

Cost shape

Skip hire is typically priced as a flat fee for the skip size and hire period, regardless of how much labour you personally put into loading it — you're paying mainly for the container and its collection/disposal, and you do the loading yourself. Man-and-van pricing reflects both the waste volume removed and the labour of loading it, since the crew does that work for you. Labour included or not

This is one of the clearest practical differences. Man-and-van removal normally includes the labour of loading the van as part of the price — you point out what needs to go, and the crew lifts and loads it. Skip hire is self-load by default: the skip is dropped off empty and you fill it yourself, unless you specifically book a "skip and man" service where a crew loads the skip for you, which is a different (and typically pricier) arrangement to plain skip hire.

Which one fits your job

If you have an ongoing project generating waste over several days, have suitable space for a skip, and don't mind doing the loading yourself, skip hire is usually the more cost-effective option. If you need a one-off clearance done quickly, have awkward access, or would rather not do the lifting, man-and-van removal is generally the better fit.
